romanziere inglese (Barnstaple, Devonshire, 1810-Richmond, Surrey, 1895). Scrisse numerosi romanzi; tra i più noti Abel Drake's Wife, or the Story of an Inventor (1862; La moglie di Abel Drake, ovvero la storia di un inventore), che ha per sfondo uno sciopero nelle fabbriche. Ne fu tratto un dramma domestico.
