critico e letterato inglese (Londra 1832-1904). Fu il primo curatore (dal 1882 al 1891) del Dictionary of National Biography (in 26 vol.). Liberale in politica e razionalista, s'interessò soprattutto del classicismo e dell'illuminismo settecentesco: le opere più significative sono History of English Thought in the Eighteenth Century (1876; Storia del pensiero inglese nel sec. XVIII), English Literature and Society in the Eighteenth Century (1904).
